Style and Senses! 

The air is cool, the ground is white, and Santa is on his way and suddenly you realize it.

Holiday season is here once more!

You may not have time to change your whole room or re-paint your walls but there is small touches you can incorporate to deck out your space, large or small.

  The Season is all about our senses, the way our space feels, smells, sounds, everything we do we do because of how it makes our senses feel.

 Let’s talk about ways you can decorate to touch on all these points.    

Smell: You don’t need to be baking Gingerbread to make it smell like you are.  Add some candles into your space in scents of vanilla or cinnamon, or create a centre piece with cinnamon sticks, cloves and fresh holly leaves for a fresh winter atmosphere.

 Touch. Winter makes us want to cuddle up on the sofa, why not add some luxurious texture while you lounge!  Throws and pillows done in fur, velvet, or chenille’s add warmth and dimension to your space.  It’s an easy way to brighten up your space and add a touch of bold colour.

Try out some sequin or fur pillows, or some throws and pillows that bring holiday cheer.

 Sound. Make sure to make a great Christmas Music Playlist or CD.  Whether you are entertaining guests or alone wrapping presents, music is a guaranteed way to put you in the Holiday spirit. The sound of a crackling fire and jingle bells on the door will add extra charm.

Taste. Be ready for surprise holiday guests with an on hand supply of Egg Nog, apple cider or your favourite holiday cocktail.  Garnishing drinks with candy canes or mint jelly beans will put a smile on even the biggest humbug of the season.  Get out of the cold and turn on the oven! Bake some delicious holiday treats to share with your guests.

 Sight.  Brighten up. As days become shorter, adding some twinkle lights is the perfect way to keep your space bright and festive.  Think metallic objects, adding mirrored coasters, or more importantly, add a tree! Today’s eco trees are made in a number of colours, widths and heights to fit your space.  When choosing decorations keep in mind the accent colours you have in your space then pull  from those or complimentary colours when choosing ornaments, a two tone colour combination is nice and simple. 

Think Red and Silver, or Black and White!  Lighting is also key in creating a beautiful sight, add dimmers to fixtures and lights to create a cozy warm ambiance.

Holiday Q & A:

We don’t have room for a tree in our condo, any other suggestions on how to make create a big impact with Christmas?

If you don’t have room for a tree definitely add a wreath, even if it’s just hanging in the window.  A wreath is a perfect way of bringing in colour and I even recommend decorating your own and giving it that personal touches!  Go big with it too, try a 40” diameter if you can. 

My Christmas tree always ends up looking messy, any suggestions on how to organize my ornaments?

Good question!  I have a ton of ornaments from past years and friends that just don’t seem to work all the time with my colour scheme.  I suggest pulling out your favorites, then organizing them by colour.  Pick one or two complimentary colours you like best and work from there.  Always keep the less is more rule in mind and if there is an ornament that means a lot to you display it in a nice clear bowl or on a table on top of a mirrored coaster, this makes an excellent conversation piece!

I want to add a lot of colour to my place for the holidays, my place is mostly grey and white and I don’t like green.  Any other suggestions on how I can keep my place looking modern but festive?

Of course you don’t need to be green!  Trees come in all sorts of colours and for you may I suggest Pink?   A pink tree is a great stand alone statement; it adds a punch of colour and keeps your modern feel.  Add silver and fuchsia pillows and accessories for added bling!
